National Market System

in the United States, an inter-exchange network system designed to foster greater competition between domestic stock exchanges. Legislated for in 1975, it was implemented in 1978 with the Intermarket Trading System that electronically links eight markets: American, Boston, Cincinnati, Chicago, New York, Pacific, Philadelphia, and the NASD over-thecounter market. It allows traders at any exchange to seek the best available price on all other exchanges that a particular security is eligible to trade on.
